Allred on Voter Suppression Bill Passing Legislature: “This bill is nothing but a perpetuation of the Big Lie”
DALLAS — Congressman Colin Allred (TX-32), a former voting rights attorney, today released the following statement after the Texas legislature passed Senate Bill 1:
“Access to the ballot box is a fundamental right and our focus should be on making voting easier for all eligible Texans—not harder.
“Eleven million Texans voted in the 2020 elections and there was no evidence of fraud. This bill is nothing but a perpetuation of the Big Lie and an attempt to intimidate and discourage certain Texans from voting.
“This is yet another reminder of why Congress must pass legislation that affirmatively expands the right to vote, restores key protections stripped from the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and protects against election subversion.
“This shouldn’t be a partisan issue and I will never stop working to make it easier and safer for all eligible Texans to vote.”
Allred has frequently spoken out against the legislature’s efforts to make it harder for Texans to cast their ballots. He penned an op-ed about the need for a federal response to protect the right to vote in the face of legislation like SB1 that adds barriers to accessing the ballot box.
