Texas has a long and proud history of welcoming people from every race, gender, creed, and religion. Immigrants strengthen and enrich our state – they worship in our synagogues, mosques, and churches; they teach in our schools; and they proudly serve their country in our military. This is a nation of immigrants, born of the idea that in America, the place of your birth is less important than the community that you choose, where you put down roots, where you hope to raise your children to have a better life and circumstance than your own.
Senate Bill Four rejects this America. This law is cruel. It is inhumane. And it is an insult to the generations of Latinos and others who built this state. I condemn this law, and call for its immediate repeal.
