President Trump’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program not only eliminates protections for nearly 800,000 young people who have done nothing wrong and are American in every way — it breaks the promise we made as a nation to defend some of the best among us. With his heartless move today, Trump is putting the lives of hardworking immigrants in limbo and threatening to tear families apart, while he passes the buck on protecting them to Congress.
DACA is in so many ways a commitment to the basic tenets of the American Dream — that if you’re willing work hard, you can achieve anything you set your mind to. Under DACA, young immigrants brought here as children have gotten an education, joined the workforce, started businesses, and made our communities stronger. At the same time, they are playing a critical role in boosting and growing our economy, contributing to billions in GDP in Texas alone.
It’s past time to pass legislation to protect these DREAMers permanently — now, in the wake of Trump’s decision, Congress and Pete Sessions must act immediately to pass the bipartisan DREAM Act. The diversity of our country is our strength, and I will fight everyday as the representative of TX-32 to ensure that DREAMers have the chance to live their American Dream.
The Trump Administration announced today that it will end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program started under President Obama. Recent estimates show that Texas could lose approximately $6.1 billion in annual GDP if DACA ends.
